Dr Sarah Merrifield answers patient's questions on Coronavirus


The most common symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are recent onset of:

  • new continuous cough, and/or high temperature
  • high temperature

For most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild infection.

Key messages

  • stay at home! Only go out to shop for basic necessities, pick up medicine, travel to work when you absolutely cannot work from home and exercise once a day.
  • if you do need to go out for any of the above reasons, practice social distancing by remaining at least 2 meters apart from other people.
  • if you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started.
  • if you live with others and you or one of them have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill
  • plan ahead and ask others for help to ensure that you can successfully stay at home.
  • ask your employer, friends and family to help you to get the things you need to stay at home.
  • stay at least 2 metres (about 3 steps) away from other people in your home whenever possible.
  • sleep alone, if that is possible.
  • wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, each time using soap and water.
  • stay away from vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions as much as possible.
  • you do not need to call NHS111 to go into self-isolation. If your symptoms worsen during home isolation or are no better after 7 days contact NHS 111 online. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999.

Changes to Practice Services

Due to advice on restricting unnecessary contact between people, the practice has suspended any new non-urgent appointments. This includes:

  • Routine blood pressure checks
  • B12 injections (affected patients will receive a letter with an alternative solution)
  • Spirometry tests
  • Asthma and COPD reviews (for stable patients)
  • Smoking cessation advice
  • Weight management
  • Travel vaccinations
  • Ear syringing

Our medical staff may advise that other routine appointments are conducted through video or telephone consultations, or may be rearranged for a later date.

We recommend that patients keep checking our website for up to date information on our services and the latest COVID-19 advice.

Isolation Notes

If you require an isolation-note (sick/fit note) for your employer because you are self-isolating due to yourself showing symptoms, or someone in your household showing symptoms, please follow the link here to complete the NHS111 sick note form which will be produced for you.

Welcome to Staveleigh Medical Centre which is located close to the centre of Stalybridge.

We are based in a purpose built medical centre. The surgery provides parking facilities for Doctors and staff only due to the limited space available. There are various parking facilities near to the practice. Access to the building is through automated doors at the front of the building and there is provision of a ramp facility for disabled service users.

We have 4 GP Partners and a full compliment of ancillary staff looking after the well-being of our patients. Our Doctors and staff aim to provide a highly professional service but one that is offered in an accessible and friendly way. We have an excellent team of nursing staff who work alongside our Doctors who provide a wide range of clinics including chronic disease management for our asthmatic and diabetic patients, weight management, smoking cessation and various other general health checks.

The reception team are trained to help patients decide if a minor illness nurse can help them. Please provide the reception team with are much detail as possible when asking for an appointment so they can assess which appointment may be best suited for your needs.

You can still see any GP of your choice and this does not affect your registration with the Practice. (Please note that the GP name at the bottom of your prescription is your allocated GP) If you wish to change this please let us know

Care Data and New GDPR Information

Patients and the Summary Care Record

The NHS in England is using an electronic record called the Summary Care Record (SCR) to support patient care.

The Summary Care Record is a copy of key information from your GP record. It provides authorised healthcare staff with faster, secure access to essential information about you when you need unplanned care or when your GP practice is closed.

Summary Care Records improve the safety and quality of your care.

You have a choice. If you are happy for your information to be used in this way you do not have to do anything. If you have any concerns or do not wish to have a summary care record, please speak to practice staff or download a copy of the leaflet “Patients and the summary care record”. You can complete an opt out form at the practice and hand it into the reception staff to process.
